ADCs to challenge ban on limestone in SC

SHILLONG, AUG 28: The Khasi and Jaintia autonomous district councils, limestone exporters and suppliers of Khasi and Jaintia hills decided on Friday to file separate appeals to the Supreme Court next month seeking a stay on the recent Meghalaya high court’s ban on limestone.

The decision was taken a meeting at a meeting of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and Land Owners, Exporters and Suppliers Associations from both Khasi and Jaintia hills region on Friday.

The meeting held at the KHADC premises was attended by the Chief Executive Members (CEMs) of the two ADC – PN Syiem and Thombor Shiwot.

“We have decided to file separate appeals but with the same objective which is to seek a stay on the Meghalaya high court order issued earlier on June 30 this year, which directed ban on limestone extraction and transportation in the state,” KHADC CEM PN Syiem told reporters.

Syiem informed while land owners, exporters and suppliers have decided to file an appeal under the banner of the Joint Action Committee of Land Owner & Quarry Association (JAC-LOQA), the two ADCs will be filing separate appeals to the Supreme Court.

Stating that everything is in place now, Syiem said the appeals are expected to be submitted to the apex court by the second week of September.- By Our Reporter
