Sangma and his accomplice Alas R Sangma of Chokpo, were arrested from Chinakkarai under Palladm police station in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu, a state  police PRO informed.

Wanted in many cases by various police stations in Garo hills, Sangma managed to escape and find himself a job in a local readymade garments factory with local name.

“He (Sangma) is the most wanted militant who managed to escape from  Mendipathar police station lock up in the August earlier this year. A criminal case is registered in this regard by the Mendipathar police,” the PRO said.

The PRO however informed that Alas R Sangma is from Chokpot Dagalgre village and is also a wanted criminal in a case where he shot his own son, who is six years old.

Narrating the swift action by Meghalaya police to track down the two militants, the police official said that on getting a lead from a source, the Special Team took the help of the Tirupur district police of Tamil Nadu and tracked William and his accomplice in a readymade garments manufacturing factory.

The Tamil Nadu police extended all necessary support and cooperation in arresting the duo.

The two are being brought to Garo hills on Wednesday for further interrogation, the PRO said.

Meanwhile, Tura police have also arrested one Sanjeev Roy, who is a close aide of Sangma from Lower Babupara, Tura on Monday and seized Rs 31, 745 besides mobile phones and incriminating documents.

According to the police, Roy is the main person who identifies potential targets for kidnapping by William’s gang from the Tura bazaar area.

The police revealed that Roy collects mobile numbers of business people and pass on these numbers to ANCA, ASAK and other militant groups for sending SMS extorting money from these victims. The police said Roy is the most trusted team member of ANCA who helped William in many kidnapping and extortion cases.

The PRO also said many persons like Sanjeev Roy, who are in to petty business, are doing the identification of business people and obtain their mobile numbers and pass on these numbers to GNLA, ASAK, AMEF and other militant groups.

These militant groups sent extortion SMS to these victims. These victims rarely share the information with police and negotiate with these militants and settle the issue. When the deal is made, the over ground informers get a percentage of the money collected from the militants, the PRO  said.

Issuing an advisory, the police appealed to all the business people NOT to share their mobile numbers with others unless they are known to them and their character is beyond doubt.  The PRO said this is a precaution they are requested to take for their own safety and also discouraged business people to engage outsiders as workers or drivers.

According to the PRO, police have noticed that in many kidnapping cases, the personal drivers have divulged the travel plans of the business people including the vehicle color, type and number, the time and route of their travel for easy identification by the militant group to waylaid and kidnap them

Lastly, the police also requested the business community to come forward to share the information about their private drivers and other workers working in their firms with the local police for verification. This would help in enhancing the security of the business community, the PRO said.- By Our Reporter
