SHILLONG, OCT 24: One Md Mukhtar Ansari was arrested by the Meghalaya police team led by Inspector BK Mishra from a village in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand after receiving complaint of ATM fraud.

The accused was brought to Shillong and was remanded to five days police custody.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said preliminary investigation revealed that the latest modus operandi adopted by the frauds is not to get the pin code but simply getting the 16 digits number of the ATM card.

“They (fraudsters) would download ‘e-wallet’ such as ‘ypaycash’, ‘mobikwik’  or ‘paytm’ in their smart phone and once downloaded they would transfer the amount from the customer to their SIM cards through these e-wallets and then the money is used for recharge, DTH and online shopping,” Kharkhrang informed.

According to Kharkhrang, one of the modus operandi is that the criminal will call up a gullible customer and identify himself as a bank manager and tell the customer that there is a problem with his ATM card and asked for his ATM card and pin number on the pretext of changing ATM card and pin number.

“Soon as the ATM card and pin number is given, the customer gets a call alert on his mobile that an amount of  Rs 30000 – 40000 has been debited from his account,” Kharkhrang said.

Kharkhrang informed that  the gang is mostly based from two districts – Jamlara and Dhanbad of Jharkhand going by the phone calls that was traced by the police and the members of such gang have good educational background such as engineerings.

Stating that such cases of ATM frauds are on the rise, Kharkrang said, “The district police have been flooded with complaints on such cases. We have a total of 51 cases registered with the district police only from January to October this year.”

Kharkhrang, however, lamented that despite innumerable advisories issued by the police to the public through media publicity yet public still fall prey to it. He reiterated, “Public should keep in mind that whoever is calling they should not disclose any details with regards to their ATM cards.”

Kharkhrang said though it is still a challenge to tackle the menace of cyber crime but the only solution is for public to be aware that ‘self protection’ is the need of the hour adding efforts are made to train police officials on how to deal with such crime.

Meanwhile, the accused has been booked under the Information Technology Act. – By Our Reporter
