‘Be alert of weapons, ultras might snatch’

securitySHILLONG, MAR 31: The state home department has issued a directive to the para military forces that have been deployed in Garo hills to be watchful of the weapons that they are carrying as the militants operating those areas might try and snatch or steal their weapons.   

Forty companies of the para military forces consisting of the CRPF, Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) and the BSF have already been deployed in different parts of the state with the bulk of the forces being deployed in the militancy infested areas of Garo hills and South West Khasi hills for the upcoming April 9 Lok Sabha polls in Meghalaya.

Additional chief secretary (home department) KS Kropha told this website that the forty companies that the state had requested from the union government arrived have already been deployed to oversee the security for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The state home department late last week had reviewed the security scenario along with the officials of the police department also attended by the Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).

The meeting chaired by the acting chief secretary PBO Warjri decided to issue directive to the security forces deployed on the ground in militants operating in Garo hills to remain alert and watchful of the weapons that they carry as the militants might try to snatch or steal it. The security forces were also directed to immediately attend to any complaint relating to the elections.

 

Kropha said that the security meeting also identified the areas that are susceptible to election related violence with past history of such instances. He informed that more security forces have been deployed in areas which have been classed as sensitive and hyper sensitive . – By Our Reporter
