Bombs: ULFA helps GNLA

SHILLONG, JULY 26: Meghalaya DGP PJP Hanaman said that the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) led by Rajkhowa is aiding the militant outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in specializing I ‘bomb-making’ in the Durama range in Garo hills region . He also informed that the police is in the job investigating the IED bomb planted yesterday killing three police personnel.

“The ULFA faction led by Rajkhowa is aiding the GNLA by extending specialize training in bomb making to the outfit,” Hanaman told reporters on Saturday. He said the training is being imparted in the camps of the GNLA and its include  the commander in chief Sohan D Shira located in the thick forest of the Durama range.”

According to Hanaman, while the strength of the ULFA is not known in the state, but in each of camps there are around 15-20 cadres of the ULFA trained along with the GNLA cadres. Admitting that the the ULFA and ISI in neigbouring Bangladesh are connected, Hanaman further disclosed that these ULFA militants also specialized in bomb making in Bangladesh.

Elaborating on the link between ULFA and GNLA, Hanaman said, inputs shared by Assam police says that whenever there is any kidnapping in Assam by the ULFA, the abductees are brought to the GNLA camps in Durama range till the time money demanded by them is paid.

Stating that a similar bomb that was exploded on Friday  was planted in Khrisnai police station in Assam, Hanaman said, “We are also trying to examine whether the bomb in Tebronggre is the same kind which was planted by the ULFA in Assam.”

Moreover, Hanaman also informed that the recent seizure of explosives including integrated circuits, electronic and remote devise detonators seized from Sohan’s camp clearly indicated that they are used for manufacture IED bombs by ULFA.

According to Hanaman, around 42 – 80 circuits were available with the ULFA and GNLA that are  enough to assemble 50-60 such bombs. He also said that through intelligence inputs, police in the past were able to identify and detect those (IEDs) before they exploded.

Referring to yesterday’s attacked, Hanama said, whenever the road is narrow, it makes it vulnerable for the police force to travel adding “In fact, we have already shared such information about this (on IEDs) with all the police to be extra vigilant in their movement.”

Hanaman also revealed that the state police had submitted a proposal to the North Eastern Council (NEC) requesting them to give the Meghalaya police  a one-time grant of Rs 10 crores for procuring bullet proof vehicles.”

Though most of the bullet proof vehicles are in operation in Garo Hills, Hanaman, however, added, “There was also proposal on the need to repair them,” adding “We cannot actually provide such vehicles to all police because the cost of such vehicles are three times than a normal vehicle.”- By Our Reporter
