SHILLONG, MAR 31: A BSF convoy carrying the mortal remains of a jawan came under attack when they narrowed escape an IED attack laid by militants while the convoy was travelling on the National Highway-51 in West Garo Hills district injuring its jawans, officials said.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when the BSF convoy was attack near Kherapara, 25 km from Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo hills , BSF official informed.

According to the official, the convoy was carrying the mortal remains of constable Ayon Paul of 36 Bn BSF, from BOP Dumnikura. The convoy consisted of three vehicles, one Tata 407 truck, one Maruti Gypsy and a Bolero.

Tata 407 truck was carrying the dead body and black flags were displayed on the vehicle.

“The IED exploded 5-10 yards ahead of moving vehicle and as a result of pressure the windscreen of 407 truck shattered causing injury to the driver in his left index finger,” the BSF official said.

The Gypsy following the truck was also hit by the splinter in the windscreen causing minor and superficial injuries to two Jawans sitting at the rear, the official said.

Fortunately, no major injuries were caused to escort party.

The BSF strongly condemned the cowardice attempt at its convoy party, carrying the mortal remains and said the attack displayed the desperation and moral bankruptcy of the militant outfit.

A BSF release said, “The BSF condemns such senseless act of militants, who are trying to create terror and a fear psychosis in the hearts and minds of people.

BSF further maintained that it will not be deterred by these dastardly attacks and will continue to perform its mandated role with competence in the best traditions of the force.- By Our Reporter
