SHILLONG, JAN 8: Cabinet on Tuesday approved the “settlement of agreement” between the ANVC and the government even as it decided to extend the proposed expansion of powers of the district council to the Khasi and Jaintia hills autonomous district councils too.

Briefing reporters Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma told reporters after the cabinet meeting,  “We have approved the settlement agreement and expect that the union cabinet also  approves the proposal of the state government.”

The government, through its interlocutor has agreed on 13 points including the expansion of powers of the Garo hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) the final settlement of which would be signed after the union cabinet’s approval.

The complete name and jurisdiction of proposed autonomous councils would remain the same, however, fund flows to these councils and their responsibility over some of the departments would be added.

According to Sangma, the government would constitute a committee with representatives from the state government, the MHA and concerned autonomous district councils and the ANVC on the expansion of the powers and responsibilities.

The tripartite agreement with which the ANVC had with the state and the Centre since 2004 has been settled in January 5.-By Our Reporter
