SHILLONG, NOV 21: Opposition Meghalaya People’s Forum (MPF) said that chief minister Mukul Sangma should take responsibility for the prevailing law and order situation in the militancy infested Garo hills region as he belongs from there and not the home minister.

Opposition leader Donkupar Roy told the assembly on Friday, “Here is a case where the state government as a whole has failed to contain militancy and the right person to take this responsibility is the chief minister Mukul Sangma and not the home minister.”

Roy statement came a day after the state home minister Roshan Warjri tendered her resignation owing moral responsibility for the prevailing law and order situation in Garo hills region.  He said, “It could be her personal experiences and may be all these things have affected her (Warjri) personally.”

Roy also said that the chief minister being from Garo hills region should be more concern over the situation.” According to him, many times the state government has to take a collective responsibility because the problem is created by the home department alone.

Militancy problem in the state reached its peak since 2010 before Warjri took the post as the first woman home minister of the state.

Roy, however, said, “But I don’t believe the problem of law and order situation is the only reason behind the minister’s sudden resignation.” He stop short of from commenting on wheter the internal rumblings within the Congress party in the state is one of the reasons for the home minister resignation.

Earlier, the MPF had threatened to raise the issue of the police charge-sheet against the Meghalaya social welfare minister Deborah Marak for her alleged nexus with GNLA for allegedly using the militants to influence voters during the current session besides the issue related to the Education scam in 2009-10 involving the then education minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.- By Our Reporter
