Cong burn PM effigy

SHILLONG, MAY 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi effigy was burnt   as a mark of protest against the failure of his NDA government, which has completed its one year, to curb the increasing crimes against women in the country.

The effigy was burnt by members of the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC), in front of the Congress Bhavan on Tuesday.

“Even after completion of one year, the NDA government led by Narendra Modi has totally failed to address the issue related to crimes against women in the country and North East,” MPMC president Joplin Shylla told reporters.

Accusing the Centre for trying to sweep the problem under carpet, she said, “Everyday whether in electronic or print media, we could see that crime against women is increasing at an alarming rate.”

She said that women from north east are also victims of such crimes and there is not much done about it by this government.

“I feel this government is not serious and burning of the effigy is to show that we strongly protest against the government insensitiveness towards women issues and their security,” Shylla said.

Speaking about the state scenario on the issue related to crimes against women, the MPMC president, however, defended saying, “The state government is taking up issues related to women in the right perspective.”
