SHILLONG, SEPT 30: Security in Meghalaya have been beefed up to ensure a peaceful Puja celebration even as the East Khasi hills district administration appealed to people and all business establishments to defy the bandh called by the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) starting from Wednesday 6 pm to Thursday 6 pm.

“We assured the public that necessary security measures have been put in place to ensure peaceful Puja celebrations,” acting East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Cyril VD Diengdoh told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday.

The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has called for a 24 hour total shutdown in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region to protest against firing incident in East Jaintia Hills District which led to killing of two civilians.

Diengdoh informed that magistrates and police personnel will be deployed in the different parts of the state’s capital adding “We assure that security is adequate to ensure that the bandh will not affect the celebrations.”

Diengdoh further appealed to the public and all business establishments across the district to come out and open their shops without fear.  He said, “We urged the shop owners not to fear and open their shops on these two days.” – By Our Reporter
