Drugs seized from by-pass

SHILLONG, OCT 29: Over 24, 000 bottles of phensedyl worth Rs 37 lakh were seized from a Tripura-bound truck at the Shillong bye-pass during a checking conducted by the Custom officials on Wednesday.

After receiving inputs about movement of the vehicle carrying these banned cough syrups, the custom sleuths immediately laid a trap at the Shillong bye-pass. During the checking, the truck was stopped and a huge cache of phensedyl was seized, a senior custom official informed.

The official said that the truck was carrying 257 bags of rice which had 81 cartons of the banned cough syrup hidden well inside them (rice bags).

The truck was carrying FCI rice from Changsari railway and was on its way to Agartala, the official said.

The official said the consignments were bound to Tripura where it was supposed to be delivered to its handlers in Bangladesh. According to the custom officials, the seized drug is worth over Rs 37 lakh in the market.

The driver of the truck was arrested and booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.- By Our Reporter
