Fake FIR against KSU

SHILLONG, AUG 25: Khasi Students Union (KSU) on  Thursday lambasted the district administration and police department for entertaining a fake complaint, which allegedly aims at defaming the reputation of the organization, without proper verification and investigation.

The statement was made after Investigation Officer (IO) of Laitumkhrah police station found out that the FIR filed against members of KSU Laitumkhrah unit was fake and false after conducting preliminary investigation which indicated that person named in the FIR has never even filed the complaint.

The said complaint was lodged by one Karuna Sindhu Ghosh on August 23 alleging that members of KSU-LU picked him up from Laitumkhrah Bazar and took him to their office at Laitumkhrah where they threatened and demanded Rs 5 lakh as fine for possessing land at Demseiniong Shillong. Later, the complainant paid the KSU members Rs. 1 lakh, it has stated.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference on Thursday, Karuna said, “I was shocked to see that my name came out in media reports as a complainant and immediately went to the police station. When the FIR was shown to us, I found that it was not my signature.”

He said, “We have decided to file an FIR on the matter since someone have misused my name and forged my signature.”

It was also learnt that the complaint was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District by post and accordingly was forwarded to Superintendent of Police (SP) for necessary action. The SP had forwarded the same to the Laitumkhrah PS since the matter falls under its jurisdiction.

A delegation of the KSU had also met the officer in-charge of Laitumkhrah police station to seek clarification on the matter after Karuna had inform the leadership that he had never filed the complaint against the union.

KSU publicity secretary Shemphang Lyngdoh said, “The OC of Laitumkhrah told us that the FIR was found to be a fake after an inquiry was conducted by the IO.”

He informed that the inquiry was conducted based on the direction of the SP who has received the complaint submitted to the DC.

Stating that the FIR by miscreants was design to defame the union, Lyngdoh said that the office of the deputy commissioner and  the police department should have followed laid down procedure before acting on any complaints.

“We advice the DC and police department to ensure that they verify such complaints which has defamatory contents besides proper investigation before taking steps to register the FIR,” he said.

When asked, the KSU publicity secretary said, “We feel that the police department should take responsibility and find out the real culprits and punished them as per the law.”

Condemning the incident, KSU Laitumkhrah unit president Silvester Marwein said that the fact is that the unit is functioning without an office in the area and in no way it is involve in such activities.-By Our Reporter
