Five militants arrested

TURA, AUG 29: The deputy commander of the newly floated militant outfit  Achik National Cooperative Army (ANCA) along with four others were arrested by police from along Assam-Meghalaya border in West Garo hills district.

Amar A Sangma, the deputy commander of ANCA was arrested with four others during a joint operation launched by Meghalaya and Assam police, a senior police officer said.

The police officer informed that Sangma is also the younger brother of outfit’s self styled Chairman William A Sangma who escaped from the police lock up in Mendipathar police state and is still at large.

All the five arrested cadres were brought to the Tura police station for further interrogation. The militants revealed that the outfit has been responsible for kidnappings from Tura, Tikrikilla, Phulbari areas of Garo Hills and Agia area of Assam besides extortions.

“They have also revealed that they had formed ANCA for raising funds through kidnapping and extortion for procuring weapons from Dimapur,” the police officer informed. He said that Amar Sangma@ Amar Thapa disclosed that without weapons, nobody would pay money to any group adding that weapons are very much required for their activities.

Another arrested cadre of the ANCA identified as Dilseng K Sangma disclosed that weapons are supplied from Dimapur, but at a very high cost because of transportation risk, the police officer said adding “ANCA has only one ideology that is made quick money through extortion and kidnappings and disappear.”

During interrogation, the deputy commander of the outfit also revealed that the outfit’s chairman William A Sangma had sent two militants to Dimapur for bringing weapons.

Thapa disclosed that William A Sangma is using young people for arms smuggling from Dimapur.

Recently William A Sangma had sent Mankanson W Sangma, who is 14 years of age to Dimapur along with a hardcore ANCA member Elwart M Sangma to Dimapur for weapons, police said while informing these two were caught by Assam police along with the weapons from Guahati Railway Station.

According to police officer, William A Sangma engages small boys for arms smuggling as it is very easy for these young people to get bail as they are under aged. These young people are never sent to jail. – From Our Correspondent
