GNLA deserter killed

TURA, SEPT 18: In a joint operation by Meghalaya police and Army in North Garo Hills, a GNLA deserter was killed Thursday morning, while another managed to escape. The army from neigbouring Damra from Assam’s Goalpara district was called in for the operation.

The slain rebel has been identified as Teseng Sangma. The operation took place around 5:35 am.

Police said that they launched the joint operation late Wednesday evening at Bangsi Minol village, near Dainadubi, about 110 km from Tura. Police recovered an ISAS rifle with one magazine from the rebel.

Police said another militant Gobin Sangma managed to escape. He was also hiding with Teseng at Bangi Minol village. The slain militant belonged to Ajan Momin alias Jimmy of Williamnagar GNLA command.

Police is verifying whether the INSAS rifle belonged to Savio Marak, a former cop, who joined the outfit or the border security forces. Teseng Sangma was part of a new gang of dacoits, who were on an extortion spree in North Garo Hills.
“We had very specific inputs on their presence and launched the operation. Teseng had deserted the GNLA. He had started his own gang after leaving GNLA. His gang was responsible for the recent abduction of a woman teacher”, said Jerry Marak, SP of North Garo hills informed.
According to the SP, the relatives of the slain rebel have disowned him and have asked the police to perform his last rites. “We had requested the family of the rebel to consider on humanitarian grounds, but they have refused to do so”, he informed.- From Our Correspondent
