GNLA militant gunned down

TURA, MAR 31: Meghalaya police on Tuesday gun downed the main accused in the gruesome murder of Josbina Sangma of Chokpot in South Garo hills. In June last year, the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants had killed Josbina, a mother of four children.

Josbina was shot dead on a point blank range. The outfit had claimed that Josbina was a “police informer”.

The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos busted the GNLA hideout at Nengkra village in East Garo hills at around 6 am today. In the encounter Kiljan Sangma alias Jangjang, area commander of East Garo Hills was killed. Nengkra is about 12 km from Williamnagar town.

Kiljan had order another militant Tengton Sangma to kill Josbina on March 4.

“After fierce gun battle between the GNLA and the SWAT commandos,  our team managed to gun down Kiljan”, said Davies Marak, East Garo hills SP.

The militants were sheltered at a temporary hideout in a thick forest area. “Kiljang was wanted in several cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion in Garo hills”, Marak informed.

Police are of the view that his killing is a major setback to the GNLA. “One AK rifle and a cache of ammunition, some documents and Bangladeshi currency were recovered from the encounter spot”, Marak added.- From Our Correspondent
