Golf hawkers free,relocated

SHILLONG, DEC 8: Even as hawkers are being evicted in other parts of the city, the Golflink dorbar shnong and the Pynthorumkhrah legislator AL Hek have promised to relocate hawkers and shift them permanently from footpath to the newly constructed shopping complex adjacent the market once completed.

The village dorbar and Hek wants to set an example of making Golflink’s street and footpath ‘hawker free’ and add to the pristine look of the ‘historic golf course.’

The decision to shift the hawkers from the roads and footpaths will also help in easing traffic congestion and free movement of pedestrians.

This decision was taken at a meeting organized by the Dorbar Shnong of Golflink and attended by the former health minister AL Hek, also local MLA of Pynthorumkhrah, R Wahlang, magistrate of East Khasi hills, N Syiem, SP Traffic, H Kharmudai EE PWD and hawkers from the area.

Golflink headman JB Lyngdoh urged the hawkers to shift to the temporary arrangements made by the Dorbar Shnong to avoid road accidents and to ensure cleanliness of the locality before relocating them to the permanent location in the ongoing shopping mall that is still under construction.

Hek, on the other hand, urged the hawkers to comply with the High Court directive and work with the authorities to ensure that accidents are avoided and pedestrians are not harassed while using the footpaths.

Hek also made an announcement that the hawkers would be permanently shifted to a shopping complex adjacent to the market in the near future.

The shopping complex is nearing completion and all the hawkers would be shifted to the complex.

Wahlang lauded the efforts of the Dorbar Shnong and appealed to the Dorbar Shnong to work towards making Golf Links litter free. He lauded the unique role played by the Dorbar shnong and stressed on the need to keep roads and foot paths free from encroachments.

The hawkers from Golflink area, who attended the meeting, appreciated the decision of the Dorbar Shnong and expressed gratitude to Hek for his relocation plan.

The hawkers promised to work in tandem with the state governmental authorities and the Dorbar Shnong to make Golf Link free from litter.

After the meeting Hek , dorbar shnong members along with the hawkers and senior government officers inspected the ground floor of the complex where the hawkers would be rehabilitated.

The hawkers congratulated Hek for his generosity in providing the ground floor of the market complex to them. They also expressed willingness to shift to the complex as and when it is ready.
