SHILLONG, MAR 28: Meghalaya government Friday informed that it is waiting for the approval of the union government on the three mediators it had proposed to initiate peace talks with the banned Garo rebel outfit – Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

In a statement issued by the Meghalaya government joint secretary of political department on Friday it has been informed that the government is committed to the peace talk and is only awaiting for the approval of the union government on the three names it had suggested who would play the role of the mediators.

The government statement came a day after the GNLA had warned the political campaigners not to campaign or hold rallies and meetings of the Congress in Garo hills till the state government clarifies its position on the proposed peace talks and whether it had send the names of the three mediators which chief minister Mukul Sangma had claimed is with the union government for approval.

The GNLA had also warned that whoever violates the warning and holds political meetings will be shot thrice in the legs as all the area commanders in Garo hills have been given this particular directives.

In the government release, the official informed that the chief minister had written a letter to the union home minister on March 8, in which he had underlined the necessity for exploring other options for finding a more enduring solution to the problem of insurgency adding that the chief minister had also suggested to the centre to designate an interlocutor to initiate a dialogue with the GNLA.

“The CM had also suggested the names of three persons of eminence who could be designated as facilitators to facilitate the interaction between GNLA and the Interlocutor,” the government release informed.

The chief minister in his letter to the union home minister had also underscored the need for a quick response to the proposal of the state government so that the problem of insurgency could be tackled at the earliest.

As a follow up to the chief minister’s suggestion, the chief secretary had also written a letter to the union home secretary on March 25 on the need for holding talks with GNLA and other militant groups in order to rid the state of the scourge of insurgency and ensure that developmental projects do not get stalled.

The government release said the state government is committed to bringing in peace and harmony amongst all sections of the people so that all reap the benefits of development throughout the state.

The close source told me that it is 95% sure Mukul Sangma is connected to the Militants for his political gains.. and why did he said these words,
“The CM had also suggested the names of three persons of eminence who could be designated as facilitators to facilitate the interaction between GNLA and the Interlocutor,” the government release informed.

my point is that, He could have suggested his name. He played his cards round and round so as to delay the game like the Naga peace solution.. It will be no surprise if the peace talks will take place in Pine wood hotel or somewhere in Thailand.. a blunder for the Garo innocent civilians indeed
