Heroin worth Rs 35 lakhs seized, one arrested

IMG_8775SHILLONG, OCT 18: Nearly half a kilo of heroin worth approximately Rs 35 lakhs was seized from one person while two others managed to escape when a vehicle they were travelling in was caught plying on the wrong side of the road at the outskirt of the city here on Wednesday.

The incident took place at around 7 am when a Bolero with a Manipur registration number plate (MN 02B 1921) was stopped by a home guard personnel for violating the traffic rule by plying on the wrong side of the road near a petrol pump at Mawblei.

On seeing the home guard, three persons including a woman immediately came out of the vehicle and start running away which in the process one of them who was carrying a bag was apprehended.

The apprehended person identified as Seikholen Hoakhit, who hails from a village in Manipur was also arrested by the police of Madanrting police station and the district’s anti-narcotic cell.

Police also seized from his possession four packets of heroin weighing 437.13 grams along with empty plastic containers. The Bolero used for the smuggling activity was also seized by police. According to sources, the smugglers were coming to Shillong.

Police have termed the catch as the biggest seizure made so far this year in their bid to zero down on drug smugglers.

Shillong, the state capital has become the main transit point of heroin, which is a worrying trend for the state which is plague with the problem of having quite a sizeable number of drug users.

Meanwhile, police are still conducting a search to nab the other two accused persons.
