HSSLC: St Anthony score the perfect 10

SHILLONG, MAY 5:  For St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School it is that magic moment that rarely comes to an educational institution or individual no matter how prestigious or renowned it might be.

It is call the “perfect ten” made famous by Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci who became the first woman in Olympic game history to score a perfect 10.

The rare of the rarest moment came to St Anthony Higher Secondary School on Monday at 10 am when it scored all the ten positions in the science stream and occupied all eight positions in commerce stream of the HSSLC examination 2014 results declared by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE).

The fifth position in the commerce stream went to  Juhi Paulof Seven Set Annexe Higher Secondary School, Shillong and the tenth position went to Shama of St. Edmund’s College (Higher Secondary Section), Shillong.

In both the science and commerce streams St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School outshined others school with Anindita Das Choudhury topping the science while Sanchayita Das top the commerce streams.

That both the toppers are students of the prestigious St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong is not a mere coincident but reflects on the glory of the school they studied.

Soon after the results were declared, it was but inevitable that students of St Anthony’s School came out of the classroom and rejoiced at their seniors success in their HSSLC examinations making the school’s flag flutter higher and higher.

Overwhelmed with the results, the school vice principal Surjit Tigga said, “We have set our foot very strong in Meghalaya in term of academic,” He did not forget to pat the students on their back when he also said, “The reputation of school is because the students are good themselves.”

The school has fixed Wednesday to felicitate all the toppers.

The proud Science topper Anindita Das humbly said, “I thanked God for what I have achieved, teachers for guiding me and parents for inspiring me.”

Das who was inundated with sweets by her teachers informed that her success can be attributed to hard work and good health.  She said, “Hard work plays an important role and of course good health,” even as she added, “Science is meant for those who love the subject.”

However, her fellow schoolmate from commerce stream, Sanchayita Das was candid enough to admit that she never expected to secure the first ten position.

Sanchayita said, “It was unexpected but nonetheless hard work pays. The formulae of my success are studying and playing, it’s all about striking a balance in life.”

Of the total 3145 students including 1696 female candidates who appeared in the science stream, 2369 students cleared the HSSLC examination with the total percentage pegged at 75.33 per cent.

In commerce stream, 2443 students appeared for the examination, 1659 were declared successful with 67.91 per cent passing out.

However, the females outshined the male candidates

South Garo Hills district recorded 100 percentage of pass in Science stream followed by West Khasi Hills District with 88.19 per cent, North Garo Hills District – 78.95 per cent, while East Jaintia Hills District has the lowest percentage of pass with only three of the twenty four students clearing the exams.

East Khasi Hills district, which is considered the hub of education, registered 77.27 percentage of pass with 1605 of the 2077 clearing the examination.

In the commerce examination, East Jaintia Hills district topped the district wise percentage of pass with 87.93 per cent followed by East Garo hills district with 85.71 per cent, Ri Bhoi district – 78.48 per cent. However, East Khasi Hills District which had 1825, the maximum of candidates appeared, 1261 passed the examination. The percentage of pass in the district was 69.10 per cent.- By Our Reporter
