SHILLONG, OCT 30: Porters – Dajus– operating in Iewduh will for the first time have their own ‘uniforms’ making it easier for people to identify them especially for those who requires their services.

The introduction of uniform was initiative by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) as part of its commitment to streamline the market as well as restore its lost glory.

KHADC chief executive member Adelbert Nongrum also handed over the uniforms to the Hima Mylliem authority for distribution to all the porters registered with its office at a function held on Thursday morning.

The function was attended by MDCs from both ruling and opposition parties besides officials and functionaries of the Hima Mylliem, the custodian of the market.

The idea to regulate the operation of the porters and also give them uniform was mooted by former CEM  Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.

Speaking on the occasion, Nongrum said, “The market being so overcrowded has created a lot of insecurity to the public especially those who are in need of the services of a porter.”

Nongrum said the uniforms provided to the porters will to an extent help in instilling the confidence of the public as well as ensuring that porters carry their duty faithfully.

The Syiem of the Hima Latho Manik Syiem expressed his appreciation to the district council for coming up with such an initiative in the interest and welfare of the market. He said, “This will also go along way in preventing unnecessary incidents such as deceiving the public.”

The uniform having print with the alphabet ‘K’ is for the indigenous porters and ‘NT’ (which stands for Non Tribal) for non-indigenous porters. Each of the porter will be allotted a number.

The uniforms were given to a total of 232 porters who are working within the jurisdiction of the Iewduh market.”

Basaiawmoit also hand over the labour licenses issued by the council to the Hima Myllliem for distribution to the non-indgenous porters of the market.- By Our Reporter
