SHILLONG, MAR 21: Congress Mahendraganj legislator Dikkanchi D Shira today asked the Meghalaya government to inquire into the implementation of the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) in the state.

Raising a supplementary in the Assembly, Shira said she observed that many toilets were constructed under the scheme in several schools but with no provision for water.

“I urge the minister to take measures for inquiring into the implementation of the programme and take action accordingly,” she said.

In his reply, Minister in-charge PHE Prestone Tynsong assured to look into the matter while maintaining that as per provisions, toilets in all schools should be provided with water supply.

According to him, once the implementation of the programme is completed, the department will ensure that water is provided.

He informed that lower primary and upper primary schools both government and non-government are covered under the TSC.

Under the programme, a total of 13,501 toilets for boys and 14,867 toilets for girls have been constructed, he said.

Out of this, over 2000 repairing works have been completed while 175 do not need any repair.

Claiming that all such toilets are functional, the minister informed that when the scheme was launched in 2004-05 an amount of Rs 20,000 was sanctioned for construction of each toilet and again in 2014, the amount was raised to Rs 40,000.
