Jain, Mehta in the race for state DGP post

SHILLONG, DEC 17: Meghalaya additional DGP (SB) SK Jain and former state ADGP Rajiv Mehta are in the race for the Meghalaya’s top cop job as the present Director General of Police (DGP) PJP Hanaman will be retiring on December.

The names of the two figured in the list of the five senior Assam-Meghalaya cadres IPS officers who will finally take over as the new Meghalaya DGP from Hanaman.

The State Security Commission (SSC)  held a meeting on Wednesday and chief minister Mukul Sangma informed reporters  that the committee will sit once again by end of February-March to take a final call on the appointment of the new DGP in the state.

The SCC has also empanelled five names of senior IPS officers who is like to become the next Meghalaya DGP.

Sangma said,“After scrutiny, we have shortlisted the five names of IPS officers.”

The five names shortlisted by the SCC includes – DK Pathak (a 1979 batch), Rajendra Kumar (1980), Ramesh Tayal (1980), Rajiv Mehta (1981) and SK Jain, the official source said.

Earlier, home department sources said the present Assam Director General Khagen Sharma (1982) was also in the list of the IPS officers empanelled for the post of the DGP in the state.

These officers are presently holding different positions of the rank of Director General in the different departments across the country.

Pathak is presently the holding the post of Director General of BSF, Kumar – Director General of Home Guards, Assam, Tayal – ADG SSB New Delhi, Mehta – Director General of Narcotic Control Bureau, New Delhi, and Jain as Additional Director General of Police (ADG) .

Besides Hanaman, other senior IPS of the state who will be retiring from their service includes the current Director General of Home Guards & Civil Defence Kulbir Krishan who will be going for retirement on January 31, 2015 followed by Additional Director General (ADG) Prem Singh on April 30, next year.

Krishan who belongs to 1976 batch is presently the senior most IPS officer in the country.

Sources further informed that there is possibility that the SSC will select Mehta as the new DGP of the state since he is retiring only on 2016.- By Our Reporter
