MDC Grace quits HSPDP

SHILLONG, SEPT 30: In a setback to the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), Nongskhen MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri resigned as its member citing due to personal reasons.

Kharpuri, also an executive member holding the Education portfolios in the earlier Executive Committee headed by CEM Ardent Basaiawmoit tendered her resignation to the HSPDP president Hoping Stone Lyngdoh on Tuesday morning.

Kharpuri had joined the HSPDP just months before the council polls, which was held in February this year.

The HSPDP, one of the oldest regional political parties in the state is one of the three coalition partners under the ruling All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

The other coalition partners include United Democratic Party (UDP) and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM).

The sudden resignation of the MDC from Nongskhen comes days before the election of the new chief executive member (CEM) after Basaiawmoit quit as CEM of KHADC.

It may be mentioned, the ARPA in its meeting held yesterday had decided to put up KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum as the new leader to head the KHADC.

Nongrum would have to be elected to the office of chief executive member on the floor of the council. The election will be held on October 8.

Meanwhile, Kharpuri said she would however continue to support the ARPA by saying the alliance strength will remain at 17 in the house of 30.

Efforts were also made on the part of the party president and other senior leaders to persuade Kharpuri to reconsider her decision which she refused. She maintained that her decision to quit was taken after a thorough consideration.

“I do not have any grudge against the party, but I decided to quit after I felt that I could no longer adjust myself (with the party). The reasons, which made me to resign from the HSPDP, were unavoidable and personal, and I will continue to remain as an Independent member till the end of the term,” Kharpuri said after she met Lyngdoh.- By Our Reporter
