Shillong, Oct 10: Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary underscored the need for continuing the amity between Bangladesh and India which he said would bring about economic prosperity in the two neighbouring countries.
Mooshahary suggested that the two countries ought to maintain cordial relations for growth and economic development.
Addressing the three-day international seminar on Indo-Bangladesh Cultural Relations cum photo exhibition of Bangladesh organised by the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, Kolkata, in Shillong Wednesday Mooshahary was of the belief that the two countries could provide ample economic opportunities to each other.
Mooshahary said,“ The policy of the Government should be geared up towards this end.”
Mooshahary reminded that the north eastern region could offer Bangladesh with abundant fresh fruits, areca nuts and betel leaves along with a host of other items and in return Bangladesh could offer other goods needed by markets here.
Mooshahary said opening of the border haat (market) in Garo Hills for exchanging goods between India and Bangladesh was aimed at promoting the border economy of the two countries.
Mooshahary said even though politics could divide geographical boundaries, yet he is convinced that it will not succeed in separating the hearts of the people as he referred to the close socio-ethnic bond between the people from both sides of the border.
Referring to the recent ethnic violence in Assam, Mooshahary was of the opinion that the clash was not based on religious consideration, but due to land scarcity.- By Our Reporter
