Ozone Layer preservation

SHILLONG, SEPT 17:  West Garo hills’s Social Forestry Division of Forest & Environment department in collaboration with NSS, Tura Government College and IPTAC, observed the International Day for ‘Preservation of Ozone Layer’ at Ampati Degree college on Tuesday. Based on the theme “Ozone Layer Protection: The Mission goes on”, the day was observed by organising various competitions for school children besides other events.

SP R Muthu, who grace the occasion as chief guest, stressed on the need to inculcate love and care for the environment from a very young age and also highlighted on the richness of biodiversity in Garo hills. He also emphasised on the need to minimise use of plastic bags to safeguard the environment from pollution. Later he gave away the prizes to the winners of various competitions.

Earlier, the West Garo hills DFO of Social Forestry RK Marak gave a brief introduction on the significance of the day and also read out the message of the UN Secretary-General on Ozone Layer Day to the students.

As part of the programme, NSS members of Tura Government college presented a song on environment befitting the occasion, while IPTAC team presented before the audience a cartoon documentary video called “Ozzy Ozone”.

The International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer is being observed on September 16 each year since 1995 as designated by the UN General Assembly to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This commemoration around the world offers an opportunity to focus attention and action at the global, regional and national levels on the protection of the ozone layer.

In drawing competition, Nigam Style A.Sangma, Biyana N.Sangma and Jetmila Ch Marak, all from St Claret Secondary School got the first, second and the third prizes respectively.

In the Poster/Slogan competition which was based on the day’s theme, Janggim M.Marak of Mother’s Union School, Merison Marak of Morning Flower School and Balmera Marak, also of Morning Flower School bagged the first, second and third prizes, while in the inter-school quiz competition St. Claret Secondary School bagged the first place, Ampati Sub-Divisional Higher Secondary School stood second and Ampati Govt.
