SHILLONG, APR 7: Like a shot in the arms, the United Democratic Party (UDP) got a fillip just before the April 9 parliamentary elections when the  Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) MLA-MDC candidate Fenela Lyngdoh declared her support to UDP’s nominee for Shillong Lok Sabha seat Paul Lyngdoh and said what is important now is to look at the ‘needs’ and not the ‘wants’. Lyngdoh is also the niece of HSPDP president HS Lyngdoh.

Going all out against her party’s (HSPDP) decision to support Independent candidate PBM Basaiawmoit, Lyngdoh took part at the UDP’s election meeting at Motphran parking lot appealing to the electorates to support Paul in the ensuing polls slated on April 9.

Lyngdoh said, “The need of the hour is to look at the needs and not the wants in order to achieve the goals and aspiration of the indigenous tribal people of the region.”

Lyngdoh, also an advocate by profession, had contested the 2013 MLA and 2014 MDC elections from Pariong – Mawthadraishan constituency and was defeated by UDP candidate B Nongsiej in both.

Extending her support to the North East Regional Parties Forum (NERPF) of which UDP is part of, Lyngdoh  said, “We need a better and proper platform and a strong group to represent the state and the region at the Centre,” adding “The regional parties in the region should work together as a combine force.”

According to her, a single person ( Independent) no matter how tall he is or no matter how loud his voice can be will not make any impact in 543-member house in parliament.

“People should know the importance of the Lok Sabha election, it is India’s election and not like MLA elections,” Lyngdoh said adding “This election is also a battle of the indigenous tribal and achieve their desires and aspirations.”

Saying that the age-old boundary issue with Assam is one of the major issues concerning the people of the state, Lyngdoh  said, “We will sent Paul along with a strong hammer to knock on the doors of the government at the centre.”

Stressing on the importance of indigenous people’s identity, Lyngdoh said there is a need to fight for inclusion of Khasi language in the eight schedule of the constitution.- By Our Reporter
