Petrol bomb attack on residence of sitting MLA

SHILLONG, SEPT 18: The residence of opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) sitting MLA from West Shillong constituency Paul Lyngdoh today came under attack when two petrol bombs was lobbed by miscreants who are highly suspected to be strong supporters of the Congress party.

The incident took place at around 5 am at Mawprem when miscreants threw two petrol bombs which landed near the room of the security guard, who swiftly swung into action to doze out the fire, which has caused a slight damaged to the building.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Lyngdoh, who is also working president of the UDP, informed that he has lodged a first information report (FIR) with the Lumdiengjri Police Station against his political opponent Mahendro Rapsang from the Congress.

“We highly suspect that the incident of hurling petrol bombs is the handiwork of his (Rapsang) supporters because I am sure these are paid goons,” he said.

He said that the miscreants had adopted a similar modus operandi when they attack the residence of the party’s youth leader P Sharma recently. “The bottles which were filled with petrol were of the same brand,” he added.

The former Urban Affairs minister also pointed out that his political rival has been campaigning in a very aggressive manner against him in the past few months.

“However, I have contested elections three times, we have never fought against our opponents in this way (by using goons),” he said while urging the authorities concerned to take stern action against the culprits involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) East Khasi Hills District Davis N Marak informed that police are acting on the complaint and investigation is on to nab those responsible behind the attack.

Asked, the SP however said that police have zeroed down on one person from Mawprem locality after getting some leads from a post on facebook.

He said that action will be taken against the suspected accused once a supplementary FIR is filed by the sitting legislator.
