Power from garbage:CM

SHILLONG, SEPT 29: Meghalaya government is seeking the cooperation of Assam for taking up a first of its kind new model of producing power from wastes and garbage generated from the two states.  “Yesterday I was talking to the Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal about how we can find a solution to take care of toxic waste and garbage with scientifically advanced approach,” chief minister Mukul Sangma said.

This assume significant as officials of Hima Mylliem said that ‘garbage is the biggest enemy of Iewduh market’ to the chief minister during his first inspection to the market on Thursday.

Stating that the issue can be taken care together, Sangma said Shillong and Guwhati can come together and aggregate the garbage as the latest technology available is to produce electricity from the garbage. He said all the garbage that comes particularly from the organic garbage which is a product of waste from agriculture is actually used as fuel to generate power from bio-mass garbage.

However stating that the state’s garbage alone is not enough, he said that the total garbage is 150 to 200 metric ton per day of the whole Shillong city and this is not enough for the state to generate power.

“We are talking to Assam to do something together may be the garbage from Guwahati, Shillong, Nongpoh, Jowai and others can converge in the place where we can generate power,” Sangma said.

He also added, “We are not talking about dumping ground we are talking about a place where we generate power from the garbage and this will be the first of its kind if two states come together, it will be a big new model for other states to follow.”

Stating that the money of Assam government and Meghalaya government is also public money at the end of the day, he said, “If Assam prosper Meghalaya prosper and the country will prosper.”

He said that he has always shared with the leaders in Delhi that unless the state prospers the country will never prosper and if the state has to prosper the people and the subjects has to prosper.

He added that the two states can take this as their agenda and based on this will find solution on how to make market most attractive.-By Our Reporter
