SHILLONG, NOV 17: The State Security Commission headed by the chief minister Mukul Sangma today directed the police department to resolve the issues related to recruitment to pave way for filling up the nearly 3,000 vacancies in the department.
It may be mentioned here that the recruitment process to the different categories of posts in the department have been challenged and is pending before the Court.
The Commission during its sitting held here on Friday has discussed the matter on what should be the further course of action required to be taken vis-à-vis the ruling of the High Court.
Appropriate suggestions and recommendations were also given by the Commission which has directed the police headquarter to act on them and see how the issues can be expeditiously resolved.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, chief minister Mukul Sangma said, “These issues have been discussed and necessary direction has been given to the department to resolve them in a manner that will be acceptable from the overall judiciary perspective and observations.”
Stating that there is total of 2751 vacancies required to be filled up in the department, he said that the vacancies are crucial in view that the police is associated with dealing with the challenges of not just normal law and order related issues but also challenges of dealing with the terrorist organizations, anti-national elements, overall fight against militancy, which is a continuous process and required to be really supplemented with adequate number of manpower.
He also added that these vacancies are a matter of concern since the department is also associated with the very important responsibility of dealing with crimes against women and children, need for expeditious investigation, charge sheeting, so that the course of law is expedited.
Apart from the huge number of vacancies proposed to be filled up through the recruitment which has been challenged before the Court, Sangma said this include not only SF10 but it is for the various categories of police which include sub-inspectors, battalion cadres of both armed and unarmed constables.
He also informed that over 500 vacancies have also been accumulating in the process.
Asked, Sangma said in view that the matter is still pending in Court for final hearing, there is however an interim relief given to the department.
“Therefore based on the ruling of the high court the commission also has today look at the options keeping in mind the parameters set in the interim order of the high court and based on this the department has been asked to work on and see how the issue can be resolved and how the case can be then vacated.”
On the other hand, the chief minister informed the state security commission has also enable the state to look at the overall administration of the police.
It also looked at how measures can be discussed and recommended for enabling the police to the challenges of the call of duty associated with the police, he added.
He said that lots of interventions have been taken which are felt would help the police to not just be seen as security agency but also will be seen as friends and comrades of the people.
According to him, this will help people to have more confident and thereby enabling the police to have more inputs, more community police relationship.
