Deaf gets 32 medals in national games

TURA, FEB 17: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday felicitated 17-member contingent who had won 32 medals for Meghalaya in the 20^th National Games for the deaf

held in Hyderabad from January 4- 8.

While felicitating the contingent who had won 12 gold medals, Sangma, who apparently is elated at the success of holding the 12^th South Asian Games in Shillong, told the gathering of the state’s intention to bid for the 2022 National Games.

“We have been able to connect to the participants and delegates. We are confident that they have gone back with wonderful and positive memories. They will be our ambassador to tell the world about our rich culture, heritage and our strength”.

The chief minister felicitated 17 members contingent from Montfort Centre of Education Tura, who represented the state of Meghalaya at the National Games.

This was the second time the school represented the state of Meghalaya.

In 2015, Montfort students had won 3 bronze medals. This year, the students have performed well and managed to secure 12 Gold medals.

Congratulating the sporting talents at the felicitation programme, the chief minister said, “The team will inspire and motivate all others. They have dreamt big and have achieved. They have articulated their strengths in a manner, which commensurate their talents. It is indeed a great achievement and story for the rest of the world”.

A total of 22 states from across the country took part in the games.

Putting on record his deep sense of appreciation on behalf of the government and the people of the state, the chief minister remarked, “It is high time that the government realizes and do course correction to promote sports for the differently able children”.

Towards this end he asked the director of Montfort Bro KJ Jose to submit a proposal to the government. “One person can be instrumental in doing the turnaround. Bro Jose of Montfort has generated a positive hope”, he said. He also handed over sports kits to the director of the school and briefly interacted with the students in sign language.-From Our Correspondent
