GHADC: Administrator rule

SHILLONG, AUG 27: Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) MDC Stevie Marak on Friday batted for imposition of administrator’s rule for the alleged failure of the present National People’s Party (NPP) led executive committee (EC) in releasing the pending salaries of council’s employees. In a statement issued on Friday, South Garo Hills Boldamgre constituency MDC Stevie Marak said, “I feel it is imperative that the administrator takes over from the present EC before they run the GHADC to the ground.”

Stating that the revenue collection of the GHADC happen every day, Marak however said, “Even then the present EC was unable to disburse the salaries of the employees for the year end of 2015, which put a dampener on the Christmas celebrations,” adding “If the present EC is allowed to continue, this would only escalate matters.”

Marak was reacting to claims made by the GHADC executive committee time and again that it has been pursuing the matter with the state government for the release of funds (revenue share) meant for the GHADC to pay the salaries of the employees.

“While it is true that there is a delay in the release of funds meant for the GHADC, it is also true that the GHADC earns to the tune of lakhs every day in the form of revenue which is deposited in the treasury at the GHADC premises,” Marak said.

According to him, the revenue of the GHADC does not come only from mineral resources like coal, limestone, etc, as was highlighted in the media.

He was of the opinion that this non-mineral revenue could have been accumulated and gone towards the payment of the salaries of the employees; it would have made a difference even if part of what is due could be disbursed.

“Instead, all the revenue accumulated is being paid off to the contractors who are in collusion with the EC thereby not allowing the fund position of the GHADC to increase,” the MDC said while blaming the incompetence and rampant corruption of the present EC.-By Our Reporter
