SHILLONG, FEB 15: Former Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) chief engineer SK Sunn on Wednesday announced his decision to contest the upcoming 2018 assembly elections from Mawphlang constituency.

He made this announcement at a public meeting organized by the Lyngwiar Sain Pyrkhat Ban Ksan ka Lawei (LSPBL) held near the famous Sacred Grove of Mawphlang village, about 25km away from here.

The Mawphlang constituency is presently represented by the sitting Congress legislator Kennedy C Khyriem, a police officer turned politician who defeated the former MLA JA Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in 2013.

In his address, the former PHED chief engineer said that his decision to contest the upcoming state elections was after requests were made by many people from different villages falling under the constituency.

“With full faith and hope that you will be with me till the end, I decided to accept your request by becoming your candidate,” Sunn said adding “It is hard to say no because the voice of the people is the voice from God.”

Speakers at the meeting expressed their desires that he should contest the elections as an independent candidate on ground that the people of the constituency have had enough experiences from different political parties.

Responding to this, Sunn however said that he would allow the LSPBL to take a call on the matter.

The former senior government official also sought the unanimous consent of the people attending the meeting by asking them “what you want” and they accordingly responded “change”.

Sunn’s decision to contest the elections is likely to give a tough time to the sitting legislator accordingly to sources as the former  PHE CE is a prominent citizen of the area.

He informed that after his retirement from the department, hundreds of people have met him in his residence to request him to fight the elections.

“It was after 34 days that the people less than 7000 have approached me to take this responsibility, I decided to take this call,” Sunn said as he ended his speech by saying “My fight will be your fight and my victory will also be your victory.”
