SHILLONG, OCT 5: Congress legislator and Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief executive member Pynshngain N Syiem, who is waging a lone war against the bill passed by the state assembly to prevent holding of dual posts, has declared his non-cooperation movement against the Mukul Sangma led state government by quitting as the chairman of the Meghalaya Economic Development Council (MEDC).

“After considering all the facts on the style and functioning of the present MUA-II government under your leadership as the chief minister, I do not see any justification to continue myself as Chairman of MEDC,” Syiem said in a letter submitted to chief minister Mukul Sangma on October 1.

Announcing his resignation on Monday, Syiem) said, “It is my responsibility that I should not cooperate with such leadership, who failed to carry along the sentiment and view of members of the CLP and MUA-II government.”

His resignation came as a protest following the state government’s hurried decision to pass the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of the Legislative Assembly Meghalaya) Bill, 2015.

When asked what difference it will make since he would continue to be a congress legislator and a CLP member, Syiem, however, argued  , “On his (Mukul) leadership, I wish not to cooperate or take up any political assignment.”

To a query whether he would seek for change of leadership, Syiem said, “I will not ask anything but protest on my individual capacity as an MLA.”

He added, “As of now, I stand on my own principle being the CEM in the Congress led executive committee of the KHADC and as an MLA because the bill was passed without taking me into consideration.”

Admitting that the bill was passed with mala-fide intention to target him, he said, “It is true because nothing can be brought to the house without the knowledge of the Chief Minister.”

Syiem said it was done in a hurried way where the bill was approved in the cabinet on September 22, introduced on September 23 and subsequently it was passed on September 24.

Reiterating that the state government has failed to make the bill effective on October 1, Syiem said, “This has sent a wrong message to the MLAs… first the state government has misled us by allowing MLAs based on entry IX to contest the 2014 MDC elections, and misled me and my people on September 24 by passing the bill to do away with the tenure of the MDC from October 1.”

On a query whether is it possible for the cabinet to review or the assembly to bring back the bill to assembly for correction, Syiem said, “Yes why not, it can be brought back as it depends on the wisdom of the chief minister.”- By Our Reporter

It is not wise to play with fire and not good to underestimate the power of a common man. Mukul must think ten times, hundred times beforetaking any decision or else it may reflect upon his own reputation as a cm.

Keep it up bah PN Syiem! What you had done is appreciable. I fail to understand how the UDP MLAs being in the opposition bench are so ignorant that they resigned without using their common sense. They did not even show their dissent.
