TMC wants “Bob” to lead in elections

Shillong, Nov 7: Bracing to make its maiden foray in the Meghalaya assembly elections early 2013, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is scouting for leader to lead the party into the February 2013 election. Former home minister and Congress leader RG Lyngdoh- who didn’t contest the 2008 election after he was expelled from the Congress- name figures on the top of the hunt list followed by former Rajya Sabha MP and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president OL Nongtdu.

TMC national general secretary and former union railway minister Mukul Roy will be arriving in Shillong Thursday and  is likely to meet Lyngdoh, if he agrees, to discuss about the possibility of the latter heading the party in Meghalaya. In Garo hills the TMC had already made its electoral foray in the 2004 Lok Sabha election when PA Sangma contest from the Tura Lok Sabha seat on the party ticket after he left the NCP.

To lay the base for Thursday’s meeting with Lyngdoh and Nongtdu, TMC leader and four times Lok Sabha MP Joichan Baxla who is the party in-charge for north eastern states- along with others have arrived in Shillong Wednesday evening.

Acknowledging that the TMC wants RG Lyngdoh to lead the party in the 2013 election, Baxla said, “We will meet him and make the offer.” He, however, said that only after the arrival of Roy Thursday will they decide when they will request for an appointment with Lyngdoh. Simultaneously, the party is also trying to get Nongtdu on board.

Party sources said that Lyngdoh, in fact, was already approached through a party worker some months ago. But he had rejected. However, party leaders said, “That time it was different, but now with top TMC leaders in town, we would seriously like to discuss with Lyngdoh of the possibility of leading the party in Meghalaya. – By Our Reporter
