UDP condemns attack

SHILLONG, SEPT 18: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) today threatened to petition to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and other authorities concerned if investigation into the attack on its member’s residence indicate a “political link”.

UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said that the party is taking a serious note on the petrol bomb attack on the residence of its working president, Paul Lyngdoh, who is also a sitting legislator of West Shillong constituency, by miscreants on Monday morning.

Lyngdoh in his FIR lodged with the Lumdiengjri Police Station had alleged the incident to be the handiwork of political rival Mohendro Rapsang, a leader of the ruling Congress from the same constituency.

Terming the incident as an attempt to murder of democracy, Mawthoh said, “We strongly condemned such acts as it has been recurring in the constituency which does not augur well for the society as a whole.”

Stating that all is not well with the law and order situation in the city, the party general secretary also said that the party strongly demands the authorities concerned to step up their vigilantism and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.

“We want that the culprits behind the incident be brought to book as such attack on the house of a public representative should be viewed with all seriousness and ensure that such acts are not allowed to defeat the democratic process,” he said.

Asked, Mawthoh said that from the statement of the sitting legislator it clearly indicated that the incident is related with election politics.

“However, we leave it to the law enforcing agency to find out who is behind such attacks,” he said.

The UDP leader further maintained that if the investigation finds that the allegation of the sitting MLA is true, the party would take appropriate step with the authorities concerned on the matter.

“We will definitely take the matter with the ECI and higher authorities to do the needful if we find that there is some kind of link with election politics in the constituency,” he said.

According to him, if an opposition group is trying to defeat the democratic process then it would only bring a bad name to democracy. Therefore, the authorities concerned have to step up the investigation to get to the bottom of the matter, Mawthoh opined.
