SHILLONG, OCT 1: The Federation of Adhoc School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) has called off its indefinite sit-in protest after the state government assured implementation of four key benefits, including basic pay, effective April 1, 2026.
The decision was taken by the central executive committee (CEC) meetings of the federation held at Shillong and Tura on Thursday, a day after its leaders had met the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at his official bungalow.
“The CEC meetings held in Shillong and Tura have unanimously agreed to the minutes of the meeting with the government and we all agreed to call off the agitation,” FASTOM vice president S Jungai told reporters.
He informed that the government has assured to implement four benefits during the meeting. These include adhoc teachers will receive basic pay based on seniority, with different pay scales for teachers with 10, 20, and 30 years of service, teachers will receive annually fixed dearness allowance to help cope with inflation. The government will contribute 8% to the CPF, while teachers will contribute 8% and teachers will contribute to this fund, which will provide benefits post-retirement.
“These four benefits will be implemented by the government with effect from the next financial year that is from April 1, 2026,” Jungai said while adding “The government has sought three months’ time to prepare the basic pay, DA and CPF and then decision how much per teacher we will get it will be taken by the government before Christmas.”
When asked about their demand for upgrading adhoc schools to the deficit system, Jungai however said the chief minister has suggested to forget about the upgrading aspect and focus on a solution to resolve their problem.
“When we discussed the upgradation of the adhoc schools to the deficit system, the chief minister told us if we are going to upgrade you to the deficit system, there are criteria and if we are going to follow these criteria majority of the teachers will lose the benefit of this upgradation. He told us to let us forget about this upgradation, let us come to a solution of how we will solve your problem,” he added.
