TURA, JULY 31: Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the “peace flag-off” programme at Tura in West Garo hills district. This is an initiative of the Garo Baptist convention in collaboration with district administration to spread awareness for creation of a suitable environment for peace in Garo hills.
Speaking at the flag-off programme Sangma said, “Sustainable peace is the need of the hour. It is each one of us responsibility to create a situation for peace”. Terming the present chaos and lawlessness in Garo hills as “misfortune”, he said, “The government is in the process to identify the root cause of militancy in Garo hills. This will give an idea to the government to tackle the problem”.
Saying that frustration and anger has led to rise of insurgency amongst a section of “misguided” youths, Sangma said, “Insurgency is a lucrative option for many youths, who do not excel in their studies. There is no competition to join insurgency and many youths are being lured into such organization.”
Sangma also said that it is the endeavor of the government to introspective the ground realities leading to rising militancy. We need to correct our problem, so that we have a better future. It is our concern to look at present situation and look forward for future generation.”
In an hour long address to youths and church members of different denomination, Sangma dwelt on the need and initiatives of the government to tackle the problem. He told the gathering that the government has launched various initiatives for sustainable development and harness the potential youth energy.
Sangma said, “We should be prepared for unforeseen challenges. It is an onus on everybody to safeguard the interest of our children so that they do not get subjected to negative forces.”
Focusing on social needs for youths Sangma said, “It is imperative for different
institutions to invoke the process of thinking in the youths. The youths should be given handholding and motivation. The institutions and parents should work to instill strong faith, which will make them better citizens.”- From Our Correspondent
