SHILLONG, FEB 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated Bishop Mama Memorial School at Saltopgre in the presence of Rev Andrew R Marak, Rev Jose Chirackal, officials, teachers, students, and members of the local community.

The programme commenced with a blessing by Rev. Andrew R. Marak and Rev. Jose Chirackal, invoking guidance and success for the institution and its students.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma highlighted the transformative role of education in shaping individuals and society.

He commended the Church authorities, school management, and the local community for their initiative and cooperation in establishing the school and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure across the State.

The CM also stressed that education requires collective commitment.

“Educating children is not only the responsibility of teachers but a collective and shared responsibility of teachers, society and most importantly of parents,” he stated.

Referring to the life of his late father, P. A. Sangma, he noted that Catholic missionaries had taken him from the small village of Chapahati and provided him with an education that shaped his future.

“It was this education that enabled him to become the Speaker of Parliament,” he said, underscoring the far-reaching impact of educational opportunity.

He described P. A. Sangma as a strong advocate of education and discipline and added, “We were also like other children, averse to homework and reluctant to go to school,” emphasizing the importance of consistent guidance and support in a child’s formative years.
