SHILLONG, OCT 29: Former Rangsakona legislator Zenith Sangma on Wednesday formally rejoined the Congress after quitting the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) even as he has slammed the ruling NPP-led MDA government for allegedly destroying the state through rampant corruption.
Addressing media persons after being re-inducted to the party, Sangma said that he has consciously decided to rejoin the Congress party, which he considers his “old family,” to fight against the corrupt government and rescue the people of Meghalaya.
“The prevailing situation across the state of Meghalaya and the country as a whole, the ruling dispensation be it in the state of Meghalaya or at the Centre, they have been destroying the country,” he said.
Sangma, who has been associated with the Congress for over 20 years, alleged that the present government in Meghalaya is corrupt and has destroyed various sectors, including the power department, education, and health.
“In every department, because of corruption, this present government is destroying the state,” he said.
Sangma claimed that he has a clean track record and challenged anyone to find fault with his tenure as a minister.
“If the present government does some inquiry or investigation into the departments I was looking after during my tenure, I will not have any stress because I am pretty sure that even a single dot was not misused of public fund,” he said.
On his brother Mukul Sangma’s continued association with the TMC, Zenith Sangma said that in politics, there is no family, and what matters is the welfare of the people.
He also refused to comment on the leadership of the TMC, saying that it is up to others to analyse.
Sangma said that he rejoined the Congress party because it is a pan-Meghalaya and pan-India party that has a presence in every nook and corner of the state. He also said that he is committed to serving the people of Meghalaya and will work under the party’s leadership.
When asked about his role in the party, Sangma said that he is a true soldier of the party and will carry out whatever assignment is given to him by the leadership. He also declined to comment on the party’s plans and programs, saying that they will be announced in due course.
