SHILLONG, JAN 7: The elusive Meghalaya legislator Julius Dorphang who has been accused of raping a minor was arrested and brought to Shillong in the wee hours of Saturday.  He was lodged in the Sardar police station and has been taken to the Shillong Civil hospital at around 10 am.

Dorphang, who is a former HNLC chairman who surrendered and later contested the elections and won, has been one of accused named in the rape of minor that surfaced after she was rescued from a guest house owned by Meghalaya home minister HDR Lyngdoh’s son.

Dorphang was arrested from Guwahati’s Gorchuk by the East Khasi hills police assisted by Assam police. Prior to arresting him from Gorchuk, the joint police team from Meghalaya and Assam raided a house in Hatigaon where he was allegedly staying. But the rape accused legislator managed to give the police a slip.

A session’s court on Wednesday had issued a non-bailable warrant against Dorphang for allegedly raping the minor girl twice.

Dorphang is likely to be produced before the court on Saturday afternoon. Detail news will follow shortly
