SHILLONG, JAN 12: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has strongly condemned the Meghalaya government’s treatment of contractual staff nurses who have not received their salaries since October 2025 and yet are being forced to continue working without any written extension of service.
“This is nothing short of state-sponsored exploitation,” said Roy Kupar Synrem, President of HYC in a statement issued on Monday.
HYC questioned the government’s moral authority, stating that making nurses work without pay and formal service orders violates labour norms, service rules, and basic human dignity.
“Verbal assurances and informal instructions cannot replace written orders or justify months of unpaid labour,” Synrem added.
The council demands immediate disbursement of pending salaries, written extension orders for affected nurses, and strict action against responsible officials.
“We therefore demand, with no ambiguity to Immediately disburse all pending salaries from October 2025, with arrears cleared in full; Immediate issuance of written extension orders for all affected contractual nurses and fixing of responsibility and strict action against officials responsible for this deliberate neglect,” Synrem said while emphasizing “healthcare workers are not bonded labour. Their rights cannot be trampled upon.”
