HYC terms deputy CM’s remarks on child safety as ‘irresponsible’

SHILLONG, OCT 10: The Hynniewtrep Youth’ Council (HYC) has criticized the deputy Chief minister in charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong for allegedly blaming parents for the safety and security of children in the state.
In a statement issued on Friday, the HYC stated that the Deputy Chief Minister’s remarks were “irresponsible, insensitive, and shocking,” and unbecoming of his position as in charge of law and order.
The council expressed disappointment that instead of seeking cooperation from stakeholders to prevent crimes, the deputy chief minister is shifting the blame to the citizens.
“We condemn the statement made and the person who made it and want to remind our deputy chief minister that it is the responsibility of the State Government to ensure the safety and security of the citizens and their properties. And if the State Government is unable to guarantee security and safety of its citizens, such a government has no moral rights to continue governing the State,” it said.
The council noted that the people of the state are living in fear and anguish following recent killings, and what they require is an assurance from the government that their children are safe and that culprits will be punished according to the law.
The HYC also reminded the deputy chief minister that policing is a part of governance, and the public cannot take the law into their own hands. However, if the government feels that the law and order situation is beyond its control, then maybe it should consider handing over policing to the general public.
The council also disagreed with the deputy chief minister’s suggestion that parents should take care of their children, stating that not all parents have the luxury to keep track of their children 24/7, especially those struggling to make ends meet.
“So, to tell the parents to take care of their children due to the law-and-order situation in the State is an attempt by the Government to shift the responsibility from itself to ensure that crimes are reduced and then the Government gets the credit,” it added.
