SHILLONG, DEC 5: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has warned that it will take necessary actions to dismantle the illicit drug network and remove unauthorised settlements at Lum Survey, should the government persist in its inaction.
“If the government and Defence Estate Office continue to ignore these urgent concerns the HYC will take necessary actions until every illegal settlement is cleared and the drug network at Lum Survey is dismantled once and for all. The inaction of authorities is no longer acceptable. Our youths and the Citizens of the State deserve better protection and Shillong deserves a cleaner future, not a hot-spot of illegal activities,” HYC president Roykupar Synrem said in a statement issued on Thursday.
He said the HYC is outraged over the government’s failure to address the persistent issue of illegal settlements at Lum Survey which has become a hub for illicit activities, including drug trafficking.
The HYC has accused the authorities of neglecting their responsibilities, allowing the area to become a safe haven for criminals.
“When authorities look away, criminals grow stronger. Lum Survey has become proof of Government failure,” Synrem stated.
“How many more youths must fall victim to drugs before the Government opens its eyes?” he further questioned, emphasizing that drugs are a security threat to the state and its citizens.
The HYC has demanded that the authorities take immediate action to address the issue and ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens of Shillong
