SHILLONG, DEC 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday inaugurated the first phase hostel of Ephatha Societ, Dkhiah West in East Jaintia Hills District.
Also present during the inauguration was Kyrmen Shylla, MLA, Khliehriat.
The Chief Minister also distributed the Two-Wheeler Handicap-Friendly Mobility and other aids and appliances during the event and had an interactive session with Persons with Disabilities and the members of the Ephatha Society.
During the interactive session, the Chief Minister encouraging the PwDs to speak said, “It is not everyday you will have the Chief Minister come and interact with you so it is a great opportunity for you to tell us your ideas and suggestions and what we as a government can do to support your aspirations,” and also added that the suggestions and ideas that will be generated from the discussions will be important for other PwDs in the state.
He also said that the approach road to the hostel will be taken immediately and the remaining facilities of the hotel will also be completed. He also informed that support for further activities for the hostelers like framing activities, skilling and livelihood activities as mentioned by the members of the society will be taken up in the second phase.
Concluding his remarks the Chief Minister said to the PwDs who were present for the occasion, “Do not feel inferior to anyone else or that you are incompetent we are here to support you, overcome your challenges and move forward in life.”
Later, the Chief Minister interacted with the PwDS who shared some of their concerns and challenges in everyday life while some sought the support of the government in their businesses and initiatives.
The Ephatha Society was formed on 2nd December 2020 with a mission to open doors of opportunity, create an inclusive and supportive environment for persons with disabilities. Since its establishment the society has carried out numerous activities including surveys, seminars, training programs, vocational skill development programs and awareness campaigns.
The Inclusive Training Centre of the society presently under construction will provide dedicated facilities for children and adults with disabilities including training in tailoring and other skill development activities.
