Meghalaya CM inaugurates synthetic football turf at Madan Centre playground, Nongkrem

SHILLONG, OCT 16: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the newly constructed Synthetic Football Turf at Madan Centre Playground, Kharbuli, Nongkrem in East Khasi Hills, in the presence of Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla.

The project, whose foundation was laid in 2021, marks a major boost for sports development in the area.

Among those present at the event were former MLA Lambor Malngiang, Dr. Balajied Sing Syiem, Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Manhiam Marbaniang, Chief Engineer, State Sports Council Meghalaya, and other dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister expressed happiness over the completion of the turf and said it reflects the government’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people. He noted that Meghalaya has a predominantly young population and emphasised the importance of investing in education, sports, and infrastructure to help them grow and succeed.

“Sports teach discipline, hard work, and teamwork. Over the past seven years, more than 70% of our current sports infrastructure has been developed,” he said.

He added that the government is promoting sports at the grassroots level by organising block-level leagues and tournaments that engage youth and encourage a healthy lifestyle. He urged students and local youth to use the new facility responsibly and make the most of it to develop their skills.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla praised the Chief Minister’s vision and active involvement in development initiatives. He highlighted various government programmes that support athletes, young entrepreneurs, musicians, and youth through training, financial aid, and employment opportunities. He also spoke about Meghalaya’s preparations to host the National Games in 2027, which will give young athletes greater exposure to world-class sporting facilities.

Former MLA Lambor Malngiang thanked the Chief Minister for sanctioning the project during the COVID-19 pandemic and appreciated the visible transformation of the playground since the foundation was laid in December 2021. He expressed gratitude for the government’s continued support for infrastructure and youth development in the constituency.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the Headman of Kharbuli, Shri C. Kharbuli, who thanked the Chief Minister, Ministers, and officials for their guidance and support.

The new turf is expected to boost football and sports activities in Nongkrem and nearby areas, providing young players a modern platform to train and showcase their talent.
