SHILLONG, NOV 5: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association’s (MCTODA) strike over transportation rates for cement and clinkers has entered a critical phase, with the state government maintaining its stance that it cannot impose uniform rates beyond Meghalaya’s borders.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, in-charge of transport, made it clear that while the government has notified rates within Meghalaya, extending these to other states like Assam is beyond its jurisdiction. “The state government cannot notify rates on behalf of other states, such as Assam,” Dhar emphasized.
The MCTODA, protesting the disparity in transportation rates (Rs 9 within Meghalaya vs Rs 5 outside), has halted cement and clinker transportation. Dhar urged the association to recognize the government’s limitations and engage in dialogue, stressing that the issue is a business matter between the cement plant and transporters.
With 2-3 arrests made in connection with the Mawryngkneng incident, Dhar assured the police would proceed with their investigation.
