SHILLONG, DEC 20: The Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) expressed appreciation for Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s quick response to its demand for the release of the expert committee’s report on the state’s reservation policy, but questioned the government’s rationale for the delay.

In a video statement issued on Saturday, VPP chief Ardent M Basaiawmoit, “I would like to thank the Chief Minister for his swift response to the demand of the VPP in respect to the report of the expert committee. Even though the party feels it is rather strange to hear from the Chief Minister that the reason for the delay in announcing the report is because the report was too lengthy and too heavy.”

“This is the first time that we have come across this kind of an excuse. Perhaps the NPP‑led government determines the quality and effectiveness of a policy by the length and the weight of the policy document. Anyways, the party hopes that this is not going to be an empty promise to the people and that soon the government will come out with the report without further delay,” he added.

The VPP’s remarks came after Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, while addressing the media, assured that the expert committee’s report on the state reservation policy—a document weighing approximately 200 kg and running 4,000–5,000 pages—is now complete and will be made public shortly.
