SHILLONG, OCT 14: A mentally challenged man was rescued by the police from an angry mob that suspected him of being a “menshohnoh”.
The victim, identified as Arnikstar Rytathiang (35), a resident of Wo Mawthlong village, was found wandering aimlessly in Kynroh Nongbri village around 9 pm on Monday (October 13).
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Sohiong police team, led by the Officer-in-Charge, along with DSP (Ops) Shillong and O/C Mawngap, rushed to the scene. They found Rytathiang being guarded by village elders and the Sordar of Umthlong village at the Kynroh Nongbri community hall.
The mob had gathered outside, pelting stones and demanding to hand over the victim.
“On arrival of the SOT along with DSP (Ops) from Shillong and O/C Mawngap and team, the victim was rescued from the community hall,” East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
After rescuing Rytathiang, the police took him for a medical examination at Sohiong Civil Hospital, where the medical officer opined that he sustained minor injuries, he informed adding that the victim is mentally challenged and undergoing treatment at MIMHANS Shillong.
A case has been registered at Mawngap P.S for further investigation and legal action, the SP added.
