SHILLONG, FEB 13: The BJP is awaiting the outcome of the Judicial Inquiry Commission’s investigation into the Mynsngat-Thangsko coal mine explosion, which claimed over 30 lives.
Party chief spokesperson M Kharkrang emphasized that the government has taken action, pointing to the registration of a case, arrests, and establishment of the inquiry commission.
“The government has ultimately come up and admitted that these things have happened, and I think it is fair for us to wait for the investigation to complete,” Kharkrang said.
He stressed that the terms of reference for the commission are crucial, determining the probe’s scope.
Kharkrang highlighted the Centre’s swift response, with the prime minister and union home minister promptly contacting the chief minister to gather facts. The prime minister also sent exgratia payment to the affected families before the state government’s announcement.
Regarding calls for the chief minister to resign from the mining portfolio, Kharkrang said, “You cannot have a chief minister quitting for everything that happens… Action has been taken by the government – that is more important than quitting.”.
