SHILLONG, FEB 27: An area commander of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) surrendered to police in Eastern West Khasi Hills on February 25.
Samuel Wahlang Pahsyntiew – described to be an active cadre – of Umpohwin village surrendered at Mairang police headquarters on 25 February in the presence of family members, village authorities and senior officers, a statement issued by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) said on Friday.
The AIG said he is suspected of involvement in the 9 March 2024 IED blast near Shillong’s Syndicate Bus Stand — Them Mator area — and other incidents.
During questioning, he revealed that he and Bangladesh-based HNLC cadres had been trying to recruit young people into the outfit over the past two years.
Acting on that and other information, investigators registered CBPS (ER) Case No. 01(02)2026 and arrested two suspected cadres from Umsning.
Police said the pair are suspected of both recruitment and planting an IED at Umsning market on 12 October 2025, which was recovered and defused.
“Further action is being taken in accordance with law and surrender policy of the State Government,” the AIG said while emphasizing that investigation is continuing.
